8620 Steel Bar

Ohio Bar & Metal offers 8620 grade round bar items in a wide range of sizes. The 8620 round bar is a low-carbon nickel, chromium, and molybdenum alloy steel known for its strength, toughness, and core strength. Its low carbon content makes it easy to weld and machine, while the outer case and soft, ductile core make it wear-resistant. The high tensile strength makes it ideal for high-stress applications, such as gears exposed to heavy loads, impacts, and shocks.

Properties of 8620 Round Bar

8620 steel is made up of nickel, chromium, and manganese. With a high-tensile strength of 86,200 PSI, it has a high-tensile strength ideal for applications that require toughness. In addition to strength, it is highly malleable and machinable.

Steel bar can be manufactured as 8620 hot rolled round bar and 8620 cold finished round bar. Hot rolled steel undergoes the rolling process at temperatures up to and exceeding 1700 degrees Fahrenheit. It is easier to form and shape, but as it shrinks while cooling, it becomes more difficult to control the final shape.

Cold rolled steel, on the other hand, undergoes additional processing to improve its mechanical properties. Its strength can surpass hot rolled steel by about 20%. Additionally, it has a smoother, shinier appearance and can be used as-is in production.

8620 Steel Industries and Applications

Various industries that Ohio Bar & Metal works with can take advantage of 8620 steel. Common industries to benefit from round bar are:

  • Automotive
  • Heavy machinery
  • Industrial
  • Aerospace
  • Construction

8620 round bar is versatile, so its applications are equally diverse. Some applications include:

  • Used for bushings and sleeves to reduce friction and provide support in sliding and rotating applications
  • Ideal for pins and pinions due to 8620 steel’s wear resistance
  • Suitable for shafts for heavy machinery because of its high tensile strength
  • Preferrable in fabricating ratches due to its durability
  • Used in the manufacturing of arbors for holding or rotating tools for machining and woodworking
  • Helpful in manufacturing bearings in industrial machinery and automobiles because of its high load-bearing capacity

Alloy steel is a go-to material for applications that require load-bearing and resilience
