Ultrasonic Testing of Steel Round Bar: What the RFQ Must State
“UT required” is not a complete inspection instruction. The purchase order must define the method, edition, technique, coverage, sensitivity, acceptance basis, stage, and report.
Ultrasonic testing uses high-frequency sound to examine material for internal indications. It can be an important round bar acceptance tool, but a request that says only “UT required” leaves the supplier without a complete inspection or pricing basis.
Buyer takeaway: Specify the governing UT method and edition, technique, coverage, calibration or reference basis, sensitivity, acceptance criteria, product stage, personnel requirements, report content, and traceability.
What UT can and cannot establish
UT is used to detect and evaluate internal reflectors under a defined procedure. The result depends on sound path, frequency, technique, coupling, surface, geometry, calibration, equipment, operator or automated system, and acceptance rules.
UT does not independently prove:
- correct chemistry or grade;
- required mechanical properties;
- surface defect acceptance;
- dimensional conformity;
- material cleanliness under a different test method;
- fitness for a finished component;
- that every location was examined if coverage is undefined.
It answers the internal-inspection question created by the invoked procedure and acceptance criteria.
Name the controlling standard and edition
Different industries, product forms, customers, and jurisdictions use different UT standards or customer procedures. The public scope for BS EN 10308, for example, concerns ultrasonic testing of steel bars and a manual pulse-echo framework within its scope. It does not automatically become the correct standard for every U.S. round bar order.
The drawing or authorized engineering requirement must select the applicable method, edition, and acceptance class or criteria. Do not let a supplier guess from an application name.
Define coverage and technique
“100% UT” can still be ambiguous. State what 100 percent means:
- every bar or a sample of the lot;
- full length except defined end zones;
- full cross section or a defined sound path;
- longitudinal, transverse, radial, or other required scanning directions;
- manual contact, immersion, automated, or another technique;
- scan from one surface or multiple orientations;
- treatment of ends, blind zones, and inaccessible areas.
If the method itself defines these fields, invoke it correctly. If order-specific additions apply, list them.
Calibration, sensitivity, and acceptance are separate
A complete UT line distinguishes:
- Calibration or reference basis: how the system establishes response.
- Sensitivity: the examination level used to detect and record indications.
- Acceptance criteria: which indications cause acceptance, evaluation, repair, concession, or rejection.
Writing “UT passed” collapses those separate decisions into an unverifiable phrase. The report should identify the applicable procedure and show the information required by the order.
State the product stage
Surface condition and processing stage can affect examination. Identify whether UT occurs on hot-rolled, peeled, turned, ground, heat-treated, or finished bar, and whether it must occur before or after a particular operation.
Nucor’s cold-finished product page lists UT as a nondestructive testing method for internal imperfections within its product offering. That producer description is useful context, but it does not define the acceptance requirements for another buyer’s order.
Personnel, procedure, and equipment records
When required, specify:
- personnel qualification or employer-authorization route;
- procedure approval responsibility;
- equipment and calibration records;
- automated-system validation or reference standards;
- third-party witness or hold points;
- raw data, scan record, or summary report expectations.
Qualification language must match the governing contract. One personnel scheme should not be substituted for another without approval.
Tie the UT report to the actual bars
The report should reconcile to the product identity required by the order:
- PO and item;
- grade and specification;
- diameter and condition;
- heat, lot, bar, or bundle identity;
- quantity examined;
- method, procedure, equipment, and date;
- coverage and acceptance basis;
- results and disposition;
- examiner or system identification as required.
Public round-bar procurement documents show how UT reports can appear alongside chemistry, mechanical, certification, marking, and traceability requirements. The UT record is one part of the acceptance dossier, not a replacement for it.
A reviewable UT RFQ line
A controlled line should identify:
Product and condition; governing UT standard/procedure and edition; technique and scanning surfaces; bar and length coverage; calibration/reference basis; sensitivity and recording level; acceptance criteria; end-zone treatment; personnel route; report content; heat/lot linkage; witness and disposition requirements.
Use only purchaser-approved values. The round bar RFQ checklist places UT inside the broader material, dimensional, certification, and delivery requirement.
Do not add UT as a late blanket request
UT can affect mill route, surface preparation, processing stage, handling, subcontracting, schedule, and cost. Add the complete requirement during quotation. A late request may not be technically possible after cutting or processing, and a newly created report may not represent the required original condition.
