Round Bar for Machining, Forging & Heat Treatment
Steel round bar is used as production stock for machined, forged, heat-treated, and fabricated components. Typical parts include shafts, axles, pins, gears, fasteners, couplings, fittings, bushings, and hydraulic components.
We quote carbon and alloy rounds in hot-rolled, cold-finished, annealed, quenched-and-tempered, turned, polished, and ground conditions. Requirements can range from commercial-quality bar to Special Bar Quality material with controlled chemistry, hardenability, mechanical properties, surface quality, decarburization limits, testing, and heat traceability.
Choosing the Right Round Bar
Carbon & Alloy
Carbon grades cover general machining, cold heading, forging, and induction-hardening requirements. Chromium, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, or manganese additions are specified where deeper hardenability, core toughness, fatigue strength, or wear resistance is required.
Condition & Finish
Hot-rolled bar is common forging and machining stock. Cold drawing, turning, polishing, centerless grinding, annealing, and quench-and-temper processing can change diameter control, straightness, surface condition, hardness, and mechanical properties.
Performance and Specification Factors
The grade number does not define the complete order. The governing specification may also control chemistry, Jominy hardenability, tensile and yield strength, hardness, grain size, cleanliness, straightness, diameter tolerance, surface quality, and allowable decarburization.
Identify the applicable ASTM, SAE, AMS, ASME, or customer specification and revision. Mill test reports, heat/lot traceability, ultrasonic examination, magnetic-particle testing, or other certification requirements must be stated at quotation.
Common Round Bar Applications
- Production machining: shafts, pins, bushings, fittings, and fasteners
- Automotive and transportation: axles, drivetrain and suspension components
- Heavy equipment and agriculture: loaded pins, gears, spindles, and hydraulic parts
- Forging: blanks for high-strength mechanical components
- Energy: pump, valve, coupling, drilling, and power-transmission components
Processing and Delivery
Available processing may include annealing, quench and temper, cold drawing, rough turning, turning and polishing, centerless grinding, straightening, chamfering, precision cutting, and specified nondestructive examination. Material and processing can be quoted together when the finished requirement is defined.
