300M / AMS 6417 Round Bar: Material Profile
300M is a silicon-modified 4340-type alloy developed for high strength with toughness. It is used in aircraft landing gear and other highly loaded structural components.
AMS 6417 identifies a premium aircraft-quality, consumable-electrode vacuum-remelted material. A requirement for 300M must retain the exact AMS or customer specification; other standards for the alloy are not automatically equivalent.
For a production inquiry, provide the required bar size, supply condition, testing and source restrictions. Properties after finished-part heat treatment should be distinguished from the incoming material acceptance requirements.
Key Characteristics
- High hardenability
- Strength and toughness after appropriate processing
- Higher silicon than standard 4340
- Vacuum-remelted material under AMS 6417
Common Applications
- Aircraft landing-gear components
- High-strength structural parts
- Aerospace forgings
- Highly loaded production hardware
Ordering 300M for Production
AMS and customer requirements
Identify AMS 6417 or the exact alternative specification on the drawing. Other 300M specifications can have different requirements; include them rather than assuming equivalence.
Supply condition and section
State diameter, length, tolerances, surface condition and machining allowance. Identify the required bar condition separately from properties expected after subsequent part processing.
Program planning
Include total pounds, scheduled releases, required delivery dates and any approved-source restrictions. Testing, certification and processing requirements are reviewed with the source before quotation.
AMS 6417: Purchasing Questions
Is 300M another name for 4340?
300M is a modified 4340-type alloy with added silicon and other compositional differences. The grades are not automatic substitutes; use the material and specification required by the engineering drawing.
Does every 300M order use AMS 6417?
No. Different AMS and customer specifications are used for 300M. This page focuses on AMS 6417; provide the actual standard and revision required for your order.
Does the grade name establish the delivered strength?
General alloy properties do not establish the condition of a shipment. The quoted supply condition, section size, required tests and governing documents determine acceptance.
