AMS 6414 covers premium aircraft-quality SAE 4340 steel in the form of bars, forgings, mechanical tubing, and forging stock. For round-bar orders, the exact specification revision, diameter, supply condition, and required testing control acceptance.
Vacuum consumable-electrode remelting distinguishes AMS 6414 material from general commercial 4340 and from other 4340 aerospace specifications. A 4340 grade callout alone does not establish compliance with AMS 6414.
Include all melt-source, heat-treatment, cleanliness, inspection, traceability, marking, and certification requirements from the purchase documents with the RFQ.
Purchase to the controlling ASTM, SAE, AMS, or customer specification. Section size, supply condition, mechanical properties, surface limits, testing, and heat/lot traceability can change the acceptable material and processing route.
