Turning & Polishing for Carbon & Alloy Steel Bar
Turning removes material from the outside diameter of hot-rolled or forged bar. The cut depth is selected to reach sound metal while leaving the required finish stock.
Polishing follows turning when the order calls for a smoother surface or tighter finish requirement. Finished diameter, tolerance, straightness, surface allowance, and defect-removal depth should be stated together.
Process Benefits
- Scale and surface-defect removal
- Controlled diameter and machining allowance
- Improved roundness and surface condition
- Less stock removal at final machining
Common Applications
- Hydraulic cylinder rods
- Shafts and axles
- Bearing components
- Precision-machined parts
The process route is determined by the starting grade and condition, section size, finished dimensions or mechanical properties, surface limits, testing, quantity, and governing specification.
