4815 is considered where nickel-assisted toughness and a wear-resistant carburized case are important in a relatively low-carbon steel.

Specify the material standard, quality level, bar condition, case-depth target, and any impact or fatigue requirements.

Purchase to the controlling ASTM, SAE, AMS, or customer specification. Section size, supply condition, mechanical properties, surface limits, testing, and heat/lot traceability can change the acceptable material and processing route.
