What Annealing Changes
An annealing cycle is established from the grade, prior processing, section size, starting structure, and target hardness or microstructure. Heat-up, soak, and cooling practice must be controlled as a complete cycle.
Full annealing, subcritical annealing, spheroidize annealing, and stress relieving serve different purposes. The order should identify the required condition rather than using “annealed” as a general term.
Potential Benefits
- Lower or controlled hardness
- Improved machinability and ductility
- Reduced residual stress
- Controlled carbide or grain structure
Applications
- Shafts, gears, and fasteners
- Cold-drawing feedstock
- Parts requiring extensive machining
- Preparation for later heat treatment
What to Send
