1022 combines good ductility with enough carbon for moderate strength and shallow surface hardening.

For heading-quality work, identify the quality level, surface limits, size tolerance, and processing condition.

Purchase to the controlling ASTM, SAE, AMS, or customer specification. Section size, supply condition, mechanical properties, surface limits, testing, and heat/lot traceability can change the acceptable material and processing route.
